Like most people, I had watched many a TV show depicting the trauma of birth and after hearing birth stories from friends and family, I was preparing myself for the worst possible pain. Having shared my worries with a friend, it was suggested I check out hypnobirthing. I read a book and practiced relaxed breathing throughout my first pregnancy, not expecting miracles. I noticed that, towards the end of my pregnancy, I started to feel more at ease with the idea of giving birth and developed a new confidence and trust in my body to safely bring my child into the world. My first birth was by no means a ‘perfect birth’ on paper but it was the most incredible experience. Within a matter of days, I wanted to do all over again! I believe my hypnobirthing preparation, including mental and physical prep, and having a greater understanding and knowledge of maternity care and childbirth, influenced my birth in a positive way. It enabled me remain calm, even when my birth changed course, and supported me to advocate for my rights and needs as a birthing person. In 2021 I trained as a hypnobirthing teacher as I desperately wanted to know more and support others to have a positive experience of birth. I have been teaching hypnobirthing to expectant parents in Merseyside since 2022 and my passion for all things birth continues to grow with every couple I meet. I have also adopted the principles and practices in much more depth on a personal level, and in 2022, I gave birth to my son in a beautiful home birth - a place I wouldn’t have even considered a birth space a few years prior. I do believe that making decisions that are right for you and your baby, and supporting your mind and body to relax, can have profound effects on your pregnancy and labour. I aspire to empower birthing people to question the status quo from this place of calm and be an active partner in your maternity care.
